- The Promised Wasteland
When we meet in a foreign city, we feel destined to meet one another. When we use the language of that city, we are speaking of a foreign language. All these experiences in a new city using a new language will definitely bring cultural shock. Gili Haimovich has moved home from Canada back to Israel, and travels frequently for poetry festivals. She has penned down the experience into poetry, Promised Lands, which documents her poetry in Hebrew and English, and between cultural crosscurrents. The “lands” of the title do not simply refer to physical barriers between cultures but spheres of the soul guided by language and culture.
“There is her origin and cultural/spiritual heritage, her place and everyday life, her travels to distant lands and rich geography, her travels to her inner world and all that is so craftily and beautifully intertwined like peptides on the human DNA.” This statement, taken from a review at fekt.org, reflects not only upon the book itself but upon the global human heritage.
Gili Haimovich is a prizewinning bilingual Israeli poet with a Canadian background. She is the author of ten poetry books, four in English and six in Hebrew as well as a multilingual book of her poem ‘Note’. She was awarded prizes for best foreign poet at the international Italian poetry competitions I colori dell'anima (2020) and Ossi di Seppia (2019), a grant for excellency by the Ministry of Culture of Israel (2015), a third-prize winner of Proverse Poetry Competition (2016), a fellowship residency at the International Writers’ Workshop Hong Kong (2021) and more. Her poems are translated into 33 languages and featured worldwide in numerous anthologies and journals.

When the reality that we see is not real? What actually happened? Serina is a Hong Kong university fresh graduate who witnesses shocking atrocities in Egypt and then in Hong Kong. As the events unfolded, she later found out something went wrong in her mind. She has mental issues. She discovers that most of what she has experienced in life are delusions. One shock after another deteriorates her mental health until she is no more able to discern reality from delusion. Eventually, she realizes that among all her delusions, the atrocities she has witnessed are the only reality that cannot be denied or dismissed as hallucinations. Should she continue her medication as prescribed? Or can she live a normal life without dependent on medication?
Dr Sayed Gouda was born in Cairo and moved to Hong Kong in 1992 where he currently resides. He did his undergraduate studies in Egypt and China, majoring in Chinese, and received his PhD in comparative literary studies from the City University of Hong Kong in 2014. His research interests include comparative literature, comparative cultural studies, and translation studies. Gouda is a published poet, novelist, and translator. He is the Editor-in-Chief of a multi-lingual e-magazine called Nadwah for poetry in translation (www.arabicnadwah.com). From 2004 to 2010, he organised a monthly literary salon in Hong Kong.

Making Space: A Collection of Writing and Art

How do we situate ourselves when we navigate the city of Hong Kong—physically, and in our minds? Against a backdrop of bustling density and movement, the difficulties of making space have shaped our days. From the challenges of limited living space and the quest for personal space, to the everyday negotiations of our identities in the social space, we are constantly confronted with the question: How do we redefine the distance between the city, others, and ourselves, and between the selves within us?
This collection seeks previously unpublished writing in English, photography and visual art—by writers and artists in or from Hong Kong, as well as those who have had a close connection with the city—that explores the (im)possibility of making space. How do we remake space in our lives and our creative practices? What does this (im)possibility mean in (or in relation to) Hong Kong today?
Making Space: A Collection of Writing and Art is slated for summer 2022. The deadline for submissions is extended to 17 July 2022 (Sunday). Please send your work or questions to Nicolette Wong at cartnoodlespress@gmail.com
Submission guidelines:
Prose: Please send one short story or personal essay of up to 5,000 words.
Poetry: Please send 3-5 poems, with a maximum of 10 pages.
Translation: The above guidelines for prose and poetry should be followed, and a copy of the translated text should be submitted along with the translation. The translator is responsible for acquiring permission to publish.
Hybrid: A hybrid submission may cross genres with prose, poetry, or art (e.g. photo essays, poetry paired with artwork). We consider one prose piece (up to 4000 words), or 2-3 poems (up to 10 pages), per submission.
Photography/visual art: Please send a selection of 3-6 images.
Notes for contributors:
1. All submissions are reviewed blind. Please send your work as a Word or pdf file, and use the name(s) of your piece(s) as the title of the document. Do not include your name or any other identifying information in the document.
2. Simultaneous submissions are accepted. Please notify us promptly if your work has been accepted elsewhere.
3. There will be an honorarium for accepted work.

He finds symmetry and beauty in the form of six, writing poems with six stanzas, six lines per stanza and six syllables per line. He gathers inspirations from daily observation and readings. With imagination, he opens a gateway for you to see another world. Come and join us in his first poetry collection, A Gateway Has Opened. You will have a chance to practice writing in this new form of poetry.
