Kubrick Poetry

If we have time

Kubrick Poetry

At the Exhibition Night, the Story Revealed

An overwhelming number of guests showed up at the opening reception of ‘If I Have Time’, a poetry-x-photography exhibition organized by Kubrick Poetry. The Coming Society bookshop in Wanchai’s Foo Tak Building provided a cozy venue for our poets and photographers to display their works, and our guests filled the entire space, some even had to stand in the foyer.

The exhibition is a cross-interpretive experiment: Four photographers each supplied one image. The four images were presented to 33 participating poets who produced a total of 67 poems inspired by the images. Each photographer was then given one of the other three images (that is not his/her own) along with its corresponding poems. Based on the assigned image and its poems, each photographer came up with a re-inventive piece of art.

The evening began with a wine-and-cheese reception. Our photographers Elaine Ng, Liu Jingya, Maggie Chau, and Andrew S. Guthrie took turns presenting their works to a packed house. Ray Chung, Yuna Wong, Vanessa Wong, and Mok Tsz Yan were amongst the poets who recited their works which were projected onto a screen behind them. The night concluded with an audio-visual presentation from Choi Sai Ho, a local electronic musician. A house full of guests from the local arts and music scene were in attendance, so it was a perfect night of social networking. Those who went to the reception with hopes of exploring the exhibits got more than they expected.

Part of the fun was seeing the photographers and poets finally meeting one another. In the days leading up to the exhibition, the participants were not aware of each other’s identities. It was by meeting at the reception that they were finally able to share their views on seeing how their works had inspired another artist, and to tell another artist how his/her work had inspired them.

In addition to organizing monthly poetry gatherings, Kubrick Poetry is hoping to set up even more opportunities for interactive literary events. ‘If I Have Time’ is the first step towards a more dynamic and welcoming type of poetry meetings. Poetry is our first love, but at Kubrick Poetry, we also believe artists across various disciplines in the local creative scenes also appreciate and even write poetry, and that they too would see value in collaborating with both new and established poets. Our organization takes pride in being able to merge writing traditions of the East and West. ‘If I Have Time’ features poems in Chinese, English, French, and German written by both local-born and expatriate poets. Our photographers come from China, the United States, and the Netherlands. Kubrick Poetry strives to be international and cross-disciplinary while remaining true to words and poetry.

M aggie M uffin M ai

“If I Have Time” Yuna S.H. Wong

Your pale body and amber eyes
Glowing
Under the sunlight shining at a designated angle
On the concrete ground heated to a specific temperature
Your lowered head and streamlined shape
Composed of lipids and proteins
Calling for rescue
I want to crouch and
listen to your voices, which I believe
should be a meaningful speech rather than random sounds, but
I am with my backpack and baggage and have to
“Leave!”
My feet and
my eyes
“Let’s go—
Never simultaneous
Crouch and listen
I deliver
food with carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
scattered all over the concrete ground
You eat
food with carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
scattered all over the concrete ground
You smile
I see you smile
“Leave!”
Carrying my backpack and baggage then I
see you staring at me with your amber eyes glittering
under the sunlight shining at a designated angle
Calling for rescue, maybe
hold on.”

“Misplaced Red” Vicki Wong

We lean against the line of balusters
Secluding us from a potential death behind;
Ahead, shop windows bathed in glaring light
Beckon to us through hurrying torsos.
As metallic breathes whirl out from your brittle pink, I get pulled into a dry haze of grey.

You said age diminishes our ability to inflame again.
It hurts to see you wheeling through days
Like a shrunken balloon, drifting on the brink
Of a life that once showered you with zeal.
Sauntering always like a soulless lion,
I feel your woe, but not much of my own fire.

As the burnt chases the tip of white
Crisps of coal sprinkle around our feet like expired tears.
I toss and clap your packet of Double Happiness in my hands.
The little men inside beat with joy
Yet my heart barely ripples.

I saunter across the pavement to the windows.
A range of garnet pieces rest like lifeless specimen behind the glass;
I see glints of red crying silently to me.
The congealed is smothering them.
How I wish to snatch the spheres off the display, crack each open
And pour all the compressed flame all over your bones.

When the lost time comes back to you
Will you, will you finally hold my hand?
There, I suddenly burst into tears.

“Pseudo Partner” Vanessa Man-Yi Wong

Look at your smooth and creamy body
lies between index and middle but
never the ring one.
You were born as a paradox,
in the desire of freedom
and addiction
living in the private smoke-filled area
between you and another:
so Close
In the way of people puff and blow,
you transcend into smoke
so Close
carrying people’s troubles and thought with
your weightless body transcended
wandering in between
space and time.
Stillness. Never.
You are kind enough to live in a temporary space
without
And people find this way
of loving you.
Toujours pour la première fois.
